Hi, I’m Yung Yung.
I’m a mother, a grandmother, a wife, a sister. I’m an entrepreneur, a crafter, a friend… and I need a new kidney to live.
Give a Kidney, Save a Life.
Who We Are
This page is to share stories of my mother, Yung Yung Lok, an amazing woman who needs a kidney donation. My mother was born with a genetic condition, Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). While through healthy habits, she has managed her conditions for decades, her kidney function has decreased so much that without a new kidney from a living donor, she will likely die in the coming months.
Preemptive Transplant
My mother is seeking a preemptive transplant. This means that she would receive a kidney transplant before going on dialysis.
Getting a preemptive transplant (before starting dialysis) from a living donor has many benefits, including a lower risk of her body rejecting the new kidney.
My mother is strong.
My mother is strong. She is a fighter. She has always dedicated herself to her family.
My mother is a loving wife, a mother of two daughters, and the “GG” to five grandchildren.
As a young girl, she helped her four younger brothers immigrate to the United States in search of a better life. Although she was just a student, she made sure there was always enough food for 4 growing teenage boys. When her brother had heart surgery, when her parents were sick, she was the first to volunteer to care for them until they recovered.
About Yung Yung
My mother has healthy habits.
My mother is a happy person with healthy habits.
My mother has never smoked, she has never done drugs, and she doesn’t drink. (However, in what she calls her “devil moments,” she delights in sneaking a sip of a pina colada served by a swimming pool.)
When my mom was first diagnosed with PKD, she adjusted her diet to reduce her protein intake to prolong her life and avoid dialysis. However, this new kidney-friendly diet works against the anemia and low blood pressure that are side effects of her kidney failure. Without protein, my mom is constantly fatigued. She can’t play with her grandkids or oversee her small business as much as she would like.
My mother is brave.
My mother is brave. She is young at heart.
In her 40s, she built a successful small business designing, constructing, and selling dream houses for Houston families. At 68 years old, my mom renewed her entrepreneurial passion for creating beautiful homes. Just like she created a loving, beautiful home for her husband, daughters, brothers, and parents, she wants to continue designing homes where multi-generational families can live together surrounded by peace and beauty. My mother has so many creative ideas to share with the world, and a new kidney would help her continue sharing her gifts with the world.
Stories of Yung Yung
My mother loves her grandkids. She loves swimming with her grandkids, making dresses for the little girls, and dressing up for Halloween to trick or treat with her grandkids in the neighborhood. Her grandkids, especially the 4 and 7 year old, love hearing their GG’s childhood stories of growing up in Singapore and going on adventures with her brothers.
Victoria, daughter
My mother is selfless. For several years, my mother volunteered in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of a nearby hospital. She signed up as soon as she learned that premature babies can grow stronger when held by a loving adult. Every month she would rock and hold tiny preemies – sometimes weighing under 4 lbs – and she would bring to the hospital tiny hand-crocheted hats and new clothes that she made for these miracle babies to wear.
